Today begins vancouvers pride and joy the 2010 winter olympics! Now if you live in vancouver you are bound to see the olypians either eating at Big Mac at a local mcdonalds™ or enjoying a nice cold Coca-Cola™ but there is one team that was left behind this year..a fan favorite..
If you have seen the disney classic Cool Runnings (which Im sure you have, and if not you have yet to see the light of day) which portrays the comedic struggle of the newly founded Jamaican bobsled team in the 1988 calgary winter olympics. The movie used fictional characters but all were based off the real sledders:
Devon Harris: lieutenant in the Second Battalion, Jamaican Army
Dudley Stokes: captain from the JDF Air Wing
Michael White: a private in the National Reserves
Samuel Clayton: a railway engineer
Just to recap, on one of their final four runs their bobled flipped just meters away from the finish line and heroicly walked to it afterwards [video below].
Now after this they competed in the 1992 winter olympics and failed horribly but in 1994 qualified and came in 14th ahead of the United States, Russia, France and Italy and even won a gold medal at the World Push Bobsled Championships in 2000.
Unforunatly, even though they were on a roll they did non qualify for the vancouver olypmic games and will truly be missed. We hope to see them in years to come but untill then..
while your drinking with your friends and watching the bobsled runs, raise your glasses for our dear friends the Jamaican Bobsledd Team

happy birthday
a big happy birthday to the man who knows all and our favorite naturalist Charles Robert Darwin!
"Charles Darwin's 1837 sketch, his first diagram of an evolutionary tree from his First Notebook on Transmutation of Species (1837) on view at the the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan.
Interpretation of handwriting: "I think case must be that one generation should have as many living as now. To do this and to have as many species in same genus (as is) requires extinction . Thus between A + B the immense gap of relation. C + B the finest gradation. B+D rather greater distinction. Thus genera would be formed. Bearing relation" (next page begins) "to ancient types with several extinct forms"

the signal @ 10 o'clock 92.1fm weekdays
My friends, radio, contrary to popular belief, is not dead..and here is why:
I woke up this morning with a smile on my face..not because I awoke to the sun peaking through my window and shining on my face; and certainly not because I got lucky the night before; rather because I fell asleep to The Signal.
Many of us turn on the radio only to find ourselves on a tedious adventured called "the great scan;" switching from station to station with the hopes of finding something at least somewhat catchy, or not nickleback. Now kids, for some this hopeless journey will last a life time but scootch closer and i will tell you how i found salvation in the airwaves. It all started on my way home from work...My cassette ipod adapter was on the fritz and I just couldnt allow my ears to fall victum to another auto-tune hiphop number. And so began my search for the perfect radio station. The tale begins at 100.5; though a great new station that plays a good combo of both mainstream and indie music, but that night the Peak decided to play Kings of Leon, a choice that forced me to keep moving along in the right direction. Cruising through mainstream rock and country stations, I eventually got to the 95.3 (you know the stickers you slapped on moms minivan) and then all the way to 94.5, while wondering why two such similar radio stations even exist; at that point I didnt feel like "blaming it on the alcohol," so there i gave up completely and in a fit of frustration, slammed the scan button. I was met by silence...silence followed by a beauitful ambience and a light bass drum. As I finally settled in and began to enjoy the eupheny I looked at my radio to find i was listening to 92.1.
Every night from 10pm-12pm, host Laurie Brown creates a warm presence through your speakers as gives you the d/l on all the songs and artists you hear. Her choice of genres range from "new" classical to electronica, world, folk, improvised, and cross-genre styles; quite literally, the Signal does it all. It will catch you off guard and take you for a ride your Poniac Firefly will not believe. So if you ever find yourself tired of the same ol' same ol' and want to broaden your musical horizons, set your dials to 92.1 at 10 pm; sit back, relax and give your ears the gift of music that is nothing short of amazing.
